BIO: nick hopkin  

Creative Consultant, TV Producer & Director, Development Head

 

Nick Hopkin has had a varied career in Television and Media Production since starting as a technical trainee at the BBC in 1987 picking up competencies in studio camera operation, sound recording, telecine transmission, videotape editing and vision mixing. It wasn't long before the hallowed corridors and studios of Television Centre in London inspired Nick to jump head first into production and for over 28 years he has created a wide range of high quality, award winning and ground-breaking television content. As a Location Director, multi-camera Studio Director, Series Producer, Executive Producer and Head of Development  he has worked across a wide variety of programme genres including reality formats, entertainment, comedy, children's, factual, stop frame animation, music and multi-platform. Nick is as comfortable with scripted projects as he is with non-scripted formats.

Nick has just completed a 2 year stint as Manager Live Events at the ABC, overseeing the large scale productions as Executive Producer - Sydney NYE Fireworks 2018 / 2019, The Australian of the Year Awards, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2019 (ANZ Stadium), The WugulOra Morning Ceremony, Australia Day Live, International Jazz Day Melbourne, triple j's One Night Stand and Flag Raising & Citizenship Ceremony.  Other recent credits include Holey Moley, What Does Australia Really Think? and Emergency.

 

Nick has also had multiple roles as Series Producer on International prank show Rank The Prank for CBBC and Nickelodeon (USA), Supervising Post Producer on Foxtel's Selling Houses Australia, Post Producer on Ten's Masterchef Australia , Channel 7's Big Brother 2020 and Channel 9's The NRL Rookie, Show Runner for Disney's First Class Chefs, Creative Executive Producer on ABC 3’s wildlife-comedy series WAC: World Animal Championships and Series Producer on Air Pig’s BLUE ZOO Nick continues to offer expertise in the areas of format development and creative thinking for major broadcasters and independent producers in Australia and the UK. In 2014 he worked extensively for factual entertainment and history specialists Joined Up Films as well as offering short-term consultancy to many Australian based indies including Matchbox, Vizible Entertainment and The Feds

 

Nick is a multi BAFTA award winning Director and Producer having received gongs for the BBC’s flagship series of Live & Kicking, Serious Arctic and Hedz. After a long and illustrious career at the BBC (in London and Glasgow) Nick worked for companies such as TalkbackThames, The Foundation, Zodiak, Channel 5 and MTV Europe and GWR (part of Hit Entertainment). In 2005 Nick headed over to Hollywood in Los Angeles to take up the role of Senior Producer on the USA’s number one rated celebrity show Entertainment Tonight.

 

Heading back to the UK in 2006 Nick soon found himself returning to the BBC but this time in Scotland where he went on to create, develop and produce such shows as Hedz, Mission 2110, Stakeout and OOglies. To date Nick has produced and directed over 1000 hours of network television, developed over 15 television formats and generated over $50 million in commissioned product since 2000.

 

Having worked as a creative consultant for ABC3 in 2010 Nick rolled out his bespoke 2-Day workshop Creative Thinking for the Perfect Pitch to over eighty film and television professionals in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne. In 2011 Nick worked at Screen Queensland as the Head of Production Attraction and Project Manager, Production & Investment advising on such projects as Iron Sky, The Railway Man, Big Brother, The Strange Calls, First Fagin, The Stafford Brothers, Mystery Road and Terra Nova.
